IAP has always emphasized the training of high-level talent, and is the cradle for career scientists with expertise in the atmospheric sciences, oceanic sciences, environmental sciences and engineering, as well as other related disciplines. Many internationally renowned scholars have pursued their career in science after spending their postgraduate years in the institute.
As of 2020, the IAP has 119 PhD mentors, 62 joint PhD mentors, and 164 master’s mentors, and was one of the first institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences qualified to grant a master’s or doctoral degree approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. The IAP also operates programs for post-doc and international students.

Main focus:
1) Building the capacity of special talents in the atmospheric sciences, oceanic sciences, environmental sciences and engineering, as well as environmental engineering (professional master's degree).
2) Providing PhD and master’s degree programs (annual recruitment is about 63 master’s students and 92 PhD students)
3) Training and exchanging young scientists/students with foreign countries.
