[Seminar on 16 Jan] Review of NCEP Global NWP Model Development and Performance
Date:2015-01-08
Dr. Fanglin Yang
NOAA/NCEP/EMC Global Climate and Weather Modeling Branch
In this talk I will briefly introduce the structure of present NCEP EMC environmental modeling suite. Global Forecast Systems (GFS) is the centerpiece of the entire suite. Changes of GFS configurations and major upgrades in the past 30 years will be reviewed. Its historical performance will be assessed and compared to other international NWP models. A few cases of recent model changes with which the presenter were personally involved will be presented to demonstrate the process of GFS development. The latest upgrade to a 13-km resolution Semi-Lagrangian GFS will be explained in more detail. At the end, I will discuss remaining critical issues and near future development, in particular the development of a 128-layer GFS that extends above the mesopause.
