Dr. Yanping Li received her BS in Atmospheric Physics and Computer Science from Sun Yat-Sen University in China. She received her MPhil and PhD from Department of Geology and Geophysics at Yale University in US. She then conducted postdoc research in a joint program among National Center for Atmospheric Research, University of Hawaii at Manoa, and Colorado State University in US. In 2013, Dr. Li moved to Canada and started working as a tenure track assistant professor in the Global Institute for Water Security and School of Environment and Sustainability at University of Saskatchewan, funded through Canada Excellent Research Chair program.

Her research expands from basic science including the diurnal atmospheric tide, physical mechanism for phase-coherent convection around the world, to advanced remote sensing big data analysis for tropical Ocean, and then to interdisciplinary cold region climate change study using the cutting-edge high-resolution (<=4-km) numerical weather and climate model.

Currently Dr. Li’s group is developing advanced coupled regional climate modeling system to examine how the climate of future is going to be in western Canada. This work has contributed significantly to the 5-million NSERC Changing Cold Region Network. It will also be one of the key research focuses to pursue for the coming 77-million Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) (2017-2023) “Global Water Futures: Solutions to Water Threats in an Era of Global Change”.
