[Seminar on Sept 15]The Nature of the Hadley Cell

The zonal- and time-mean picture of the Hadley Cell is accurate but can be unhelpful. For example the sub-tropical jet is only about a third the strength of what would be given by angular conservation in the upper tropospheric branch of the Hadley Cell. It will be shown that the motions that average to give the Hadley Cell generally occur at discrete points in longitude and in time, associated with deep convection in weather systems. The importance of PV mixing processes will be highlighted and examples of the direct impact on mid-latitude weather will be given.
