Abstract: The increase of the worldwide installed photovoltaic (PV) capacity and the intermittent nature of the solar resource highlights the importance of power forecasting. The largest part of solar forecasting research deals with irradiance forecasting, which requires a further step of irradiance-to-power conversion to create PV power forecasts with an economic value. The two distinct approaches used for irradiance-to-power conversion are physical and statistical. A third category, namely the hybrid, is a general category referring to the hybridization of any two physical or statistical methods.
