ICDM2012 Workshop on "Dynamics and Predictability of High-Impact Weather and Climate Events" was held in Kunming, China

Date:2012-08-27

The International Commission on Dynamical Meteorology (ICDM), one of 10 commissions of International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences(IAMAS), held its 2012 workshop on “Dynamics and Predictability of High-Impact Weather and Climate Events” in China on 6-9 August, 2012. The workshop featured a series of keynote lectures from research scientists working on synoptic dynamics, climate dynamics and variability of the atmospheric circulations such as Monsoon systems, the El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation, Arctic & Antarctic Oscillations, tropical & extratropical cyclones, and extreme events associated with those circulation systems. It also addressed predictability on a wide range of timescales, from weather prediction, through to seasonal and decadal climate prediction. The workshop received 185 abstracts and more than 140 participants from 27 countries and regions, including China, USA, UK, France, Germany, Spain, Japan, Korea, Israel, Norway, Australia, India, Ukraine, and China Taipei, etc. attended the workshop.

The workshop is hosted by ICDM and organized by State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modelling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Prof. Jianping Li of LASG/IAP and Dr. Richard Swinbank of Met Office are co-chairs of Science Organizing Committee. Prof. Wansuo Duan and Dr. Ruiqiang Ding of IAP are co-chairs of Local Organizing Committee. The workshop was co-sponsored by World Meteorological Organization (WMO), World Weather Research Program (WWRP), World Climate Research Program (WCRP), International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS), China Association of Science and Technology (CAST), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), CNC-IUGG, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), National Basic Research Projects(973), Nanjing University, LASG/IAP, and Dynamical Meteorology Committee, Chinese Meteorological Society. IAMAS Secretary General Dr. Hans Volker, Director-General of ECMWF Prof. Alan Thorpe, Chief of the World Weather Research Division/WMO Dr. Tetsuo Nakazawa, Chair of Union Commission on Climate and Environmental Change Dr. Tom Beer, and ICSU EB member Academician Guoxiong Wu were invited to attend the workshop.

23 invited talks were given by world leading scientists in the field of dynamics and predictability, including Alan Thorpe, Hans Volkert, Nili Harnik, Guoxiong Wu, Petra Friederichs, Richard Swinbank, Fuqing Zhang, Chun-Chieh Wu, Zhemin Tan, Patrick Harr, Thomas Knutson, Mark Rodwell, Chidong Zhang, Francisco Doblas-Reyes, Hisashi Nakamura, Richard Grotjahn, Fabio D’Andrea, Henk Dijkstra, Sumant Nigam, Dev Sikka, Shang-Ping Xie, Adam Scaife, and Jianping Li. There were also 17 oral presentations and more than 100 posters.

Business meetings were held during the workshop, including ICDM committee meeting, THORPEX legacy discussion meeting, ICCL 2013 workshop preparation meeting and CCEC 2014 workshop preparation meeting.

The participants all agreed that the workshop is exciting and sensational. It provided an unusual platform for exchanges between climate and weather research communities, and promoted the research of high-impact weather and climate dynamics and predictability.
