[Early Online Release] The two interannual variability modes of the Western North Pacific Subtropical High (WNPSH) simulated by 28 CMIP5–AMIP models

Date:2014-07-11

Citation: He, C. and T. Zhou (2014). "The two interannual variability modes of the Western North Pacific Subtropical High simulated by 28 CMIP5-AMIP models." Climate Dynamics: (In Press) DOI:10.1007/s00382-00014-02068-x.

Main Conclusion

  • The observed interannual variability of the WNPSH is characterized by two distinct modes. The performances of CMIP5 AGCMs in the simulation of two modes are assessed.
  • The first mode is well reproduced by the CMIP5-AMIP models, suggesting it’s driven by the SST forcing.
  • The second mode is partially reproduced by the CMIP5-AMIP models, suggesting it’s neither a pure SST-driven mode nor a pure atmospheric internal mode.
