Investigation of the Mei-yu Front Using a New Deformation Frontogenesis Function
Date:2014-11-06
A new deformation frontogenesis function is developed from dynamics viewpoint and applied to investigate mei-yu frontogenesis and frontal rainfall process. Key points:
1.A new deformation frontogenesis function is developed on the basis of a local change rate of the absolute horizontal gradient of the resultant deformation. It can be proven that the resultant deformation is independent of the coordinate rotation.
2.Different from the traditional frontogenesis function, the newly defined deformation frontogenesis is derived from the viewpoint of dynamics rather than thermodynamics. Thus, it is more intuitive for the study of frontogenesis because the compaction of isolines of both temperature and moisture can be directly induced by the change of a flow field.
3.This new frontogenesis function is particularly useful for studying the mei-yu front involving large deformation flow. More importantly, the deformation frontogenesis bears significance for the prognosis or even prediction of future precipitation.
