Prepare for AOGS2016
Date:2015-05-25
A Preparatory Meeting for the 13th Annual Meeting of Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS 2016) was held at the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modelling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on 22nd May 2015. The meeting aimed to discuss the promotional activities for AOGS 2016, the organization of Local Advisory Committee (LAC) and the highlights for AOGS 2016 in Beijing.
AOGS was established in 2003 and registered in Singapore. It is a nongovernmental organization and formed by like-minded individuals to promote geophysical science and public benefits for Asia and Oceania.
Nowadays, Asia and Oceania holds the largest population and is still rapidly developing in the world. There are unique scientific issues to discover and understand in a region that is more diverse than any other regions. AOGS strives to remain in touch with and contribute to the geophysical world community through cooperation with European Geosciences Union (EGU), American Geophysical Union(AGU) and International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). Under the leadership of Academician/Prof. CHEN Yuntai and Prof. WU Guoxiong, Chinese National Committee for IUGG (CNC-IUGG) bidded for and won the hosting of AOGS 2016 in Beijing.
The prep meeting was hosted by CNC-IUGG. Prof.CHEN Yuntai, President of AOGS and Adviser of CNC-IUGG chaired the meeting. Chair of CNC-IUGG Prof. WU Guoxiong, Secretary-General of CNC-IUGG Prof. LI Jianping, Vice Chair of CNC-IAHS (Chinese National Committee for International Association of Hydrological Sciences) Prof. XIA Jun, President of Biogeosciences (BG) Section Prof. WANG Xiujun, Vice President of BG Section Prof. DAI Minhan, Secretary of BG Section Prof. CAO Long, Secretary of Solid Earth Sciences (SE) Section Prof. HUANG Fuqiong, former Secretary of Hydrological Sciences (HS) Section Prof. Jeanne Jinhui HUANG and other members in CNC-IUGG attended the meeting.
Prof. LI Jianping reviewed the preparation made by CNC-IUGG and Prof. CHEN Yuntai presented AOGS Executive Committee’s in-depth views on the cooperation with CNC-IUGG and suggestions for the next procedures for AOGS 2016. He expected leaders and experts from Chinese government and research institutions could be invited to join the Local Adviser Committee for AOGS 2016 and more Chinese scientists could be involved in the international academic activities.
Prof. WU Guoxiong made the welcome remarks and emphasized the historical significance of holding AOGS 2016 in China. “Under the theme of ‘Collaborative Innovation for the Promotion of Win-win Development’, the International Forum on Science and Technology Cooperation among Belt and Road Countries will be held on June 2016 ”, mentioned by Prof. Wu. It’s very important to understand this concept and extend it to the scientific research for AOGS 2016.
