IAP conducted field campaign on the stratosphere-troposphere exchange over the Tibetan plateau

Date:2016-09-09

Supported by the major research program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) "Land-atmosphere coupling system over the Tibetan Plateau and its global climate effect" and "Third Tibetan Plateau Atmospheric Science Experiment", IAP/CAS collaborated with Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences (CAMS) to conduct field campaign on stratosphere-troposphere exchange over the Tibetan Plateau during 2016 summer. In this campaign, there are three observation sites, Lhasa, Golmud (led by IAP/CAS during July 23 - August 24), and Shiquanhe (led by CAMS during June through September). The experiments mainly collected data of water vapor, ozone and particle joint sounding by balloon-borne sensors, which can measure vertical profiles of these parameters from surface up to 30 km.

This field campaign is a key part of an international collaborative field campaign on the stratosphere-troposphere exchange over the Asian summer monsoon region. During the same period, scientists from Switzerland, Germany, USA, and India also observed water vapor, ozone and particle soundings over the Indian Continent. In order to trace a same parcel of air, IAP conducted matching soundings with these international scientific groups. Totally four matching soundings were conducted successfully, which will be useful to understand the evolution of the physical and chemical properties of the same air-mass.

This field campaign was also collaborated by the ESRL/NOAA, whose new particle sensors (POPS) were launched also with IAP's sensors. This new balloon-borne sensors measured the profiles of aerosols, which will be useful to understand the distribution, formation and climate effect of Asian tropopause aerosol layer (ATAL) feature.
