University of Sussex Student Delegation Visits IAP on World Meteorological Day

Date:2018-03-27

March 23 2018 marks the 58th World Meteorological Day. On this special day, the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was happy to host the visit of student delegation from the Department of Geography, University of Sussex, UK.

Dr. ZHANG Lixia from LASG and Dr. WANG Yi, the lead of the delegation ,co-chaired the workshop between LASG and UK students. After warm welcome, Dr. ZHANG gave a brief overview of IAP and LASG, highlighting the climate research, model development and international cooperation. Dr. XIAO Chan from climate services division of National Climate Center, China Meteorological Administration was invited to give a talk entitled “China Framework for Climate Service (CFCS) and Our Practice”. Starting with “Weather-ready, climate-smart”, theme for this year’s World Meteorological Day, he introduced characteristics of China climate and relevant climate services. Dr. MAN Wenmin and Dr. CHEN Xiaolong gave talks entitled “Simulation of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) changes during the last millennium and effects from the volcanic aerosols” and Monsoon climate in China and its future change” respectively. Attendees then had lively discussion about climate effect of arctic warming and sea ice melting, cooling magnitude caused by volcano eruption in different regions.

After the workshop, the delegates visited LAPC. Deputy Director of LAPC Prof. SUN Yele introduced the 325-meter high meteorological observation tower and the pollutant sampling instrument and their significant role in studying air pollution in Beijing and in the atmospheric boundary layer research. He also showed the visitors around aerosol mass spectrometers and chemical ionization mass spectrometry. LI Linjie introduced LAPC Atmospheric Environmental Analysis Laboratory and analytic instruments including stable isotope mass spectrometer and gas chromatography.

University of Sussex is one of the leading research universities in UK. China field class is a regular activity of the geography department. Exchange on IAP climate research and meteorological observation achievements together with introduction to China climate services left the visitors deep impression.
