Water Cycle in East Asia Workshop

Date:2019-03-27

On March 19, 2019, a workshop on water cycle in East Asia was held in the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IAP, CAS). The workshop sponsored by the Climate Science for Service Partnership (CSSP-China) aimed to summarize recent advance in East Asia water cycle research and discuss future collaboration. Dr. ZHANG Lixia chaired the workshop. Around 50 scholars and graduates from Reading University and the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG) and CAS Key Laboratory of Regional Climate-Environment for Temperate East Asia (RCE-TEA) attended.

The meeting centered on moisture sources for East Asian precipitation, monsoon precipitation and its representation in models and Tibetan Plateau vortex and precipitation. Dr. Nicholas Klingaman, Dr. GUO Liang and Dr. Amulya Chevuturi from Reading University spoke respectively on process-based evaluation of regional Chinese hydro-meteorological and atmospheric Natural climate extremes, moisture sources for East Asian precipitation based on WAM method, East Asia monsoon projection by the UK Met Office unified model. IAP scholars introduced findings in the study of moisture sources of Asian precipitation based on Lagrangian methods, projection of the monsoon annual cycle, impact of resolution on future projection and the performances of FGOALS-f2 in simulating tropical cyclones and sea ice. Attendees then analyzed the advantages and drawbacks of different moisture source tracking methods, the impact of resolution on monsoon simulation and the uncertainty of monsoon projection.

Besides the workshop, three UK scholars also gave seminars during their week-long visit in IAP. Thanks to the implantation of CSSP China project, IAP and Reading University had formed sound partnership. This workshop organized by LASG provided a good opportunity to exchange latest findings in water cycle in East Asia and further promoted collaboration between two sides.
