University of Sussex Delegation Visits IAP
Date:2019-04-16
Led by Professor WANG Yi of School of Global Studies, University of Sussex (US), UK, delegation from Department of Geography and School of Global Studies paid their visit to the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) on April 12, 2019.
A seminar was first held in the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG). As co-chairs of the seminar, Dr. ZHANG Lixia and Prof. WANG Yi gave an overview introduction to IAP, LASG and US respectively. Then three young researchers Dr. CHEN Xiaolong, Dr. MAN Wenmin, and Dr. HAN Pengfei gave talks on monsoon climate in China, East Asian climate change and regional carbon monitoring for the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (JJJ) City Cluster. These talks focusing on East Asian climate and environment were cutting-edge, which advanced the knowledge of Sussex students. The seminar ended with a lively discussion among attendees about East Asian monsoon, carbon flux monitoring and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6(CMIP 6).
After the seminar, the delegates moved to the State Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Boundary Layer Physics and Atmospheric Chemistry (LAPC). ZHOU Wei introduced in details the 325-meter high meteorological observation tower and the pollutant sampling instrument and their significant role in studying air pollution in Beijing and in the atmospheric boundary layer research. She also showed the visitors around the high-resolution flight time aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) and LiDAR. HOU Shengjie introduced LAPC Atmospheric Environmental Analysis Laboratory and analytic instruments including the stable isotope mass spectrometer.
University of Sussex (US) is a leading research university in UK. This is the fourth time IAP hosted University of Sussex delegation visit. "As part of the interactive, hands-on, and eye-opening learning processes for students travelling to China from the UK, this visit has been well organised and generated a lot of interesting discussions. I believe the event will facilitate future collaborations between Sussex and IAP," said Prof. Wang.
