IAP/CAS Establishes a Research Center to Help Reach Carbon Neutrality
Date:2020-12-25
IAP established a research center on Dec 25 to provide support for reaching national target of carbon neutrality. The target-- to bring carbon emissions to a peak by 2030, and become carbon neutral by 2060-- was put forward by Chinese President XI Jinping on Sept. 22, 2020 at the General Debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly.
IAP has solid foundation in carbon-related research fields, in particular, carbon emission verification and assessment and earth science system model development. The Director-General CAO Junji declares the opening of the new research center. The new center will provide science evidence and advice, including studying carbon emission, projecting characteristics of carbon budget by 2030 and 2060, assessing contribution of different eco-systems in China to carbon neutrality, and exploring optimal path and energy structure to reach carbon neutrality by 2060.
