Northeastern Asian Symposium Held on Nov. 4-5

The Northeastern Asian Symposium on "Approaches for Future Earth in Northeast Asia – Climate Change and Its Effects" was held from November 4th to November 5th, 2021. The symposium was jointly initiated by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) was responsible for the hosting of the online symposium. Professor Zhou Tianjun (Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Professor NAKAMURA Hisashi (University of Tokyo, Japan), and Professor Kyung-Ja HA (Pusan University, South Korea) is the co-chair of China, Japan and Korea, respectively. Entrusted by NSFC, the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences is responsible for call for Chinese delegation participating of the symposium.

 

Nearly 40 experts and scholars from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Nanjing University, University of Science and Technology of China, Sun Yat-sen University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Ocean University of China, Beijing Normal University, Seoul University, Yonsei University, Pusan University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, Hanyang University, University of Tokyo, Japan Meteorological Agency, Japan Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, Tohoku University, Kyushu University, Hokkaido University, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, United Nations University, etc. participated the online symposium.

 

Focusing on 4 themes of the symposium, scientists from China, Japan and South Korea presented 32 academic reports, and shared and exchanged the latest research results from the three countries in the fields of " Northeast Asia aerosol and climate change ", " Ecological-societal health in Asia and global change ", "Monsoon and Extreme Climate", " Rapid climate change and paleoclimate ".

 

 

 

During the discussion session, participants agreed to base on the "Future Earth" plan, China, Japan and South Korea will further develop a cooperative research network on climate change in Northeast Asia and strengthen scientific research cooperation among the three countries. This symposium played an important role in attracting new ideas for the A3 research program in the field of climate change, which is be soon jointly released by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in this November.

 

This symposium was originally planned to be held in Jeju, South Korea in 2020, and was postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19. After trilateral consultation, it was finally held in the form of an online one before the call for proposal of the A3 research program in the field of climate change.
