The International Science Council (ISC) has today appointed 60 new ISC Fellows, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to promoting science as a global public good. The Fellowship is the highest honor that can be conferred on an individual by the International Science Council. Prof. WU Guoxiong is on the final list of 60 new fellows.
As an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a life tenure Professor of Institute of Atmospheric Physics/CAS, Prof. WU is an eminent and well-respected scientist in China and one of leading scientists in the international climate research community. He has long been engaged in the study of weather and climate dynamics, including the Atmospheric General Circulation and numerical modeling of climate variability. His pioneering research on the land-air-sea interaction in the subtropics and the formation of subtropical monsoon and desert has established his reputation in the international monsoon community.
Professor WU has also been actively involved in various international scientific organizations and collaboration on geosciences, including International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) where he was an Executive Committee member from 2007-2011, International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS) where he was the president from 2007-2011, and World Climate Research Program (WCRP) where he was the Joint Steering Committee officer from 2007-2011, among many others. Via these involvements, Prof. WU has promoted geosciences research internationally and proved his capability of engaging young promising scientists into the international science community.
Prof. WU's contribution to the international science community has long been noticed by ISC. From 2011 through 2014 Prof. WU was a member of Executive Board of International Council for Science (ICSU), which merged with International Social Science Council and form the ISC in 2018. Prof. WU has been actively involved in initiation and development of ISC's flagship project
Future Earth.
The ISC is a non-governmental organization with a unique global membership that brings together over 200 international scientific unions and associations as well as national and regional scientific organizations including academies and research councils. It is the only international non-governmental organization bringing together the natural and social sciences and is the largest global science organization of its type.

According to ISC
news, "The Fellowship is an honor awarded by ISC to those who champion science in and for society."
Joining the 66 Fellows that were appointed in June, it is anticipated that Prof. WU and other fellows will support ISC in its vital mission to bring science to society and help address urgent societal problems – such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, water, energy and food security, as well as urgent transformations required in research itself.
