Prof. BAO Qing Serves as Co-lead of HighResMIP
The Scientific Committee of the High Resolution Model Intercomparison Project (HighResMIP) under the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) held a work meeting online on February 7, 2023. At the meeting, Dr. Malcom Robert, High resolution global climate modeling lead, announced that Prof. BAO Qing joined the HighResMIP as the co-lead. Prof. BAO is from the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG) at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)
Fifteen committee members attended the meeting, which mainly discussed the HighResMIP Phase II scientific issues, experimental design, output variable list, and its correlation with other comparative plans.
High resolution has long been at the front of climate system model research and development. CMIP6 designed a total of 19 model comparison plans. Forty model versions participated in HighResMIP, ranking third in participation, next only to the Scenario Model Intercomparison Project (ScenarioMIP) with 56 model versions participation, and the Aerosol Chemistry Model Intercomparison Project (AerChemMIP) with 45 model versions participation. HighResMIP demonstrates the highest level of global high-resolution models and is an essential platform for developing and applying climate system models. At present, HighResMIP consists of three co-leads. Besides Prof. BAO, the other two co-leads are Dr. Malcom Robert from the Met Office Hadley Centre, UK, and Dr. Kevin Reed from Stony Brook University, USA.
