China-Brazil Earth Science and Climate Change Workshop Strengthens Bilateral Cooperation

Date:2024-04-10

The China-Brazil Earth Science and Climate Change Workshop took place in Beijing from April 1st to 3rd, 2024. Organized jointly by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (BAS) and hosted by the CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), the workshop aimed to enhance collaboration and exchange in Earth science and climate change within the framework of the cooperation agreement between the two academies.

During the opening ceremony, CAO Junji, Director of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, welcomed the Brazilian delegation. WANG Zhenyu, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Bureau, highlighted existing collaboration foundations and expressed hopes for deeper cooperation in Earth science by citing examples such as the China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite and the China-Brazil Space Weather Joint Laboratory.

Chairman of the Scientific Committee, Prof. SU Hang, and Prof. Paulo Artaxo introduced the seminar's themes and agenda, and further emphasized the established cooperation between China and Brazil in atmospheric chemistry and climate change. They mentioned collaborations based on the Brazilian Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) and the IAP meteorological tower, expressing their confidence in further promoting cooperation on climate change issues through the seminar.

The workshop attracted over 40 experts and scholars from research institutes in China and Brazil. Brazilian representatives mainly came from the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, University of S?o Paulo, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Federal University of Vi?osa, and Federal University of Pernambuco. Chinese representatives mainly came from IAP/CAS, Peking University, CAS Institute of Physics, CAS Institute of Chemistry, CAS Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, CAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics, University of Science and Technology of China, and University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The workshop focused on five main themes: urban atmospheric air pollution and climate change, development and application of Earth system models, the role of forests in mitigating climate change, land degradation and desertification, and planetary health, Earth evolution, and habitability.

The Brazilian delegation also visited the Earth System Science Numerical Simulation Facility "EarthLab" at the Huairou Science City campus of IAP/CAS. The Brazilian delegation highly appreciated the facility's simulation performance and emphasized its crucial role in simulating future Earth system processes and addressing climate change challenges.

Both sides discussed further cooperation opportunities. The Brazilian side proposed exchanges and collaborations in the field of climate change by using various techniques such as numerical simulation, satellite remote sensing, and ground observation, expecting significant cooperative outcomes within the next two years. The Chinese side suggested sharing data and implementing networked observations to improve the prediction and control capabilities for climate change and natural disaster. Additionally, both sides emphasized that future cooperation should not be limited to Earth science and climate change. Deep collaborations on various areas such as indoor and outdoor environmental health and economic policy formulation could also be put on the agenda. To further promote personnel exchanges between China and Brazil, both sides discussed the possibility of establishing China-Brazil scholarship programs to support student exchange and joint training, as well as for visits of senior researchers.
