On October 15, Dr. Ghulam Rasul, the first foreign Doctor of Science (DS) cultivated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences visited IAP. He paid a special visit to his doctoral mentor, Academician Zeng Qingcun.

Academician Zeng Qingcun extended a warm welcome to Dr. Ghulam Rasul's arrival. Dr. Rasul recalled his academic experience at IAP and shared his scientific insights on the impact of monsoon change on glacier melting and flash floods. Academician Zeng Qingcun affirmed Dr. Rasul's long-term commitment to the challenging research of extreme rainstorm events of the South Asian summer monsoon, and proposed that China and Pakistan strengthen cooperation to carry out further scientific exchange about the East Asian and South Asian monsoon dynamics.

Academician Zeng Qingcun introduced the establishment, performance and application of the Earth System Science Numerical Simulation Facility (the EarthLab). He highlighted the open-sharing mechanism of the device and welcomed Pakistani meteorological researchers to join in as users of the facility. Dr. Rasul expressed great interest in the application of EarthLab and highly praised its advanced performance.

In recent years, based on the Earth System Science Numerical Simulation Facility, IAP built a multi-model ensemble prediction system, which has significantly improved the performance of short-term climate prediction. At the meeting, Dr. Fangxing Fan introduced the climate prediction work at IAP over the past three years.

Prio to this visit, Dr. Rasul was invited by the China-Pakistan Joint Research Center on Earth Sciences at the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment (IMHE), Chinese Academy of Sciences to promote Pakistan geological research.
