Su Hang Elected Member of the Academia Europaea
Date:2025-05-13
Recently, the Academia Europaea (AE) announced its 2025 list of newly elected members. Professor Su Hang from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was elected as a Member of the Academia Europaea (MAE) after rigorous evaluation.
Established in 1988 by the Royal Society (UK) and national academies of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden, the AE is the European Union’s "national academy" and statutory scientific advisory body. Headquartered in London, it is one of the world’s most prestigious multidisciplinary scientific organizations. AE members are primarily selected from leading scholars across Europe, with fewer than 5% coming from non-EU countries as foreign members—a highly competitive honor. The academy comprises ~5,500 eminent scientists, including nearly 90 Nobel laureates, spanning natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and life sciences.
Professor Su Hang, now Director of the State Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment and Extreme Meteorology at IAP, is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He leads major research projects, including CAS Pioneer Initiatives and key national R&D programs. After earning his B.S. from Fudan University (1999–2003) and Ph.D. at Peking University (2003–2008), he worked at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (2008–2023), rising from a postdoc to tenured lead scientist.
Specializing in atmospheric chemistry and physics, Su has made breakthroughs in atmospheric oxidation, haze formation, and aerosol-cloud interactions. His work has earned international acclaim, including AGU’s Ascent Award and EGU’s Arne Richter Award, and he is a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (Geosciences).
