Sino-French Workshop on Atmospheric Chemistry Held in Beijing

Date:2025-11-11

On November 4, 2025, the Sino-French Workshop on Atmospheric Chemistry was held at Huairou Science City in Beijing.

Focusing on regional complex air pollution issues, this workshop aimed to promote exchanges and cooperation between China and France in the field of atmospheric chemistry. The workshop was hosted by the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) and was co-convened by Professor CHEN Jianmin from Fudan University, Prof. SU Hang from IAP, Prof. Christian George from the Institut de Catalyse et d'Énvironnement de Lyon (France), and Prof. Abdelwahid Mellouki from the Institut de Combustion, Aérodynamique, Thermique, Environnement (France). The workshop brought together about 40 researchers from more than ten scientific research institutions and universities in China and Franc. Mr. Mathieu Grialou, Director of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) China Office invited to attend "The CAS-CNRS Scientific Day" participated in the discussions of this workshop.

Prof. Christian George delivered an opening speech, highlighting that atmospheric science is essentially an interdisciplinary and transnational research field, and addressing global challenges such as air pollution and climate change urgently requires international collaboration and knowledge sharing. Prof. Su Hang gave a report titled "Multiphase chemistry: from aerosol to planetary surfaces", presenting team’s achievements in the development and measurement of aerosol acidity theory, new sources of soil emissions of gaseous nitrous acid, and new mechanisms of wildfires affecting stratospheric ozone budget. As the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment and Extreme Meteorology (AEEM), he also provided a detailed introduction to the core research foci of the laboratory and international cooperation network and further put forward constructive suggestions on future cooperation with French scientific research institutions in joint research, project application, and personnel exchange. Experts shared latest research findings and had in-depth discussions around topics such as atmospheric aerosols and pollution, health effects, atmospheric oxidation processes, and observation technologies. After the workshop, participants visited the National Major Science and Technology Infrastructure - "Earth System Numerical Simulation Facility (EarthLab)" at the Miyun Campus of IAP.

The workshop built an excellent platform for researchers from China and France. In-depth discussions on cutting-edge scientific issues and advanced technologies in atmospheric chemistry promoted integration of knowledge and innovation and laid a solid foundation for the two sides to deep collaboration in conducting joint research, transnational observation program implementation, and project application in the future.

This workshop was one of the three academic sessions of "The CAS-CNRS Scientific Day" held on the same day at Huairou. "The CAS-CNRS Scientific Day" was co-hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of CNRS China Office. Academic seminars constituted a key part of the event, featuring three thematic sessions: particle physics, bioimaging, and atmospheric chemistry.
