Prof. SU Hang Elected AGU Union Fellow

Date:2026-09-30

Recently, the American Geophysical Union (AGU) announced its 2026 Union Fellows on its official website. A total of 53 distinguished scholars across the globe in Earth and space sciences have received this prestigious honor. Prof. SU Hang of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IAP-CAS), was elected one of the 2026 Union Fellows for his outstanding contributions to fundamental theoretical research on atmospheric chemical and physical processes.

Founded in 1919, AGU is one of the world’s largest and most influential academic organizations for Earth and space sciences. It has more than 60,000 members from over 130 countries and regions, covering a broad spectrum of disciplines including geoscience, ocean science, atmospheric science and space science. Since 1962, AGU has annually selected no more than 0.1% of its global members for the Union Fellow recognition. This honor acknowledges exceptional scientific achievements, sustained contributions to disciplinary advancement, and prominent international academic impact in Earth and space sciences.

Prof. SU Hang

Prof. SU Hang is a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He currently serves as Director of the State Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment and Extreme Meteorology (AEEM) at IAP CAS. He has led key research projects including the Strategic Priority Research Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Key R&D Program of China, and NSFC BRICS international cooperative research projects.

His long term research focuses on atmospheric chemistry and physics, where he has delivered groundbreaking advances in frontier topics such as atmospheric oxidation capacity, haze formation mechanisms, and aerosol cloud interactions. His professional recognitions include the AGU Ascent Award, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) Arne Richter Award, and the International Aerosol Research Assembly (IARA) Fissan Pui TSI Award. He has been listed among Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers in Geosciences. One of his landmark studies was featured as one of the 19 influential research achievements by Chinese scientists in the CAS Science Development Report. A single related publication attained an Altmetric score of 9500, ranking among the top ten Science papers worldwide. As Co-Director of the Max Planck–Asia Center (MAC-AIR), Prof. SU Hang actively promotes international scientific exchanges and in-depth research collaborations with Germany, Brazil, Finland and other countries. His efforts showcase the academic standing and leadership of Chinese scientists in the international atmospheric science community.

The 2026 AGU Fall Meeting will take place this December in San Francisco, California, USA, where the formal AGU Union Fellows award ceremony will be held.

Congratulations to Prof. SU Hang!
