2011 Carbon Cycle and Climate Conference and 3rd Beijing International Summer School (BISS) on Climate and Environment were held in Beijing

2011 Carbon Cycle and Climate Conference and 3rd Beijing International Summer School (BISS) on Climate and Environment were held on August 1-5, 2011, Beijing. The Conference and the Summer School were hosted by Institute of Atmospheric Physics and co-sponsored by NSFC, Nanjing University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing University, Tsinghua University, University of Maryland and COAA. More than 300 scientists, researchers, and mainly postgraduate and undergraduate students from universities and institutes carrying climate and environment research across the country attended the events.

Background Carbon cycle is becoming a central issue of climate, energy and environment. Fossil fuel and land use emissions drive up atmospheric CO2.  Carbon sinks in the ocean and on land are absorbing half of emissions, but how these sinks will change in the future to human management and climate change is not clear. Equally importantly, how such changes will feedback to climate and societal response is poorly known. Understanding and anticipating the global carbon cycle change is thus of great scientific as well as socioeconomic importance.

The International Carbon Dioxide Conference (ICDC; www.icdc8.org) is the world's leading conference on the global carbon cycle. Since 1981, the worldwide scientific community meets every 4 years at Bern, Switzerland (1981), Kandersteg, Switzerland (1985), Hinterzarten, Germany (1989), Carqueiranne, France (1993), Cairns, Australia (1997), Sendai, Japan (2001), Broomfield, USA (2005), Jena, Germany (2009). The next meeting (ICDC9) will be held in China in 2013, offering a golden opportunity to bridge Chinese carbon research with the world, and to demonstrate China's achievements in climate mitigation and adaptation such as reforestation and renewable energy.

Scope In anticipation of ICDC9, a conference in conjunction with the BISS summer school (school.climgo.org) is planned in 2011 in China. This will serve two purposes:
(1) The conference will gather leading and emerging Chinese carbon researchers and exchange ideas on the status of carbon research in China. It will initiate the local organization for ICDC9, expected to be collaboration among a number of Chinese institutions.??
(2) The BISS summer school will provide an opportunity to train students and young researchers urgently needed in an area of critical importance to China.

Major topic areas will include the following components of the carbon cycle
1. Atmosphere
2. Land, including forest, soil, cropland, wetland, arid land
3. Ocean, including open and coastal ocean
4. Fossil fuel emissions, energy and economics
5. Carbon sequestration and carbon management
