Annual meeting of Nansen-Zhu International Research Center (NZC) was held at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences on November 23-24, 2011. Participants include Dr. Kari Kveseth (Science Chancellor of Norwegian Embassy in Beijing), Prof. Huijun Wang (Director-General of IAP and Director of NZC), Prof. Ola M. Johannessen (Excutive chairman of Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, NERSC), Prof. Peter Haugan (Director of Geophysical Institute/University of Bergen), Profs. Benkui Tan and Haijun Yang (Peking University, PKU), Prof. Daoyi Gong (Beijing Normal University), all staff and students from NZC and students from Department of Atmospheric Science at PKU. The annual meeting is chaired by the deputy director Prof. Yongqi Gao and Dr. Jianqi Sun.

In the opening of the annual meeting, Prof. Huijun Wang made a welcome speech to all participants and announced that Prof. Ola M. Johannessen was awarded as a visiting professor of IAP. Then, Prof. Yongqi Gao gave a brief overview of the scientific collaboration and scientific highlights of NZC in 2011.

After that, research scientists and students from NZC and NZC partners reported research progress in multi-aspects of climate science. The scientific talks focused on the climate variability and change in Asia, climate teleconnection between East Asia and Arctic/Atlantic, seasonal-interannual scale forecast with statistical model and marine climate.

At end of the annual meeting, all participants discussed how to improve the international collaboration and scientific research in NZC. Dr. Kari Kveseth said that she has attended the annual meeting of NZC for three times and was impressed by the progress in NZC, especially in the collaboration between Beijing and Bergen.

The NZC annual meeting is followed by the board meeting on the morning of November 24. Prof. Yongqi Gao gave a summary report of activities in NZC during 211, including scientific highlights, international collaboration, progress in scientific projections, education and training in NZC, and so on. And then, the board members of NZC discussed the main issues of scientific research and international collaboration in NZC during 2011 and made arrangement of future collaboration. In the future, more efforts are going to put in the scientific researches about climate change/sea level and impact on in monsoon areas. Furthermore, scientists at NZC are encouraged to have more communication with public media.

The NZC is a non-profit joint venture located at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IAP/CAS) in Beijing, China. Representatives from the Chinese and Norwegian authorities formally opened the Nansen-Zhu Centre on 4th November 2003. The Center is based on an Agreement of Understanding between IAP/CAS, NERSC and UoB of 7th August 2001, and a Memorandum of understanding between IAP/CAS, NERSC, UoB and PKU of 5th November 2002.
