Assistant Research Scientist Position

Subject to funding approval, the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology will make a Research Faculty appointment at the Assistant Research Scientist level (or in exceptional cases at the Post-doctoral Research Associate or Associate Research Scientist levels) as commensurate with experience. JCET is a Cooperative Agreement between the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) to collaborate in research programs in the Earth, Information, and Instrumentation sciences.

Position 612 – 15 -01 Lidar Scientist

An Assistant Research Scientist position is available through the University of Maryland, Baltimore County Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology Center. The successful candidate will work at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD within the Mesoscale Atmospheric Processes Laboratory. Additional time will be spent at the Howard University Beltsville Center for Climate System Observation in Beltsville, MD. Occasional field campaign work will be required.

A Lidar Scientist with background in both instrumentation design and application to atmospheric research is sought. The successful candidate should have experience in numerical simulation, design, construction and analysis of data from LIDAR systems; particularly Raman LIDAR. Areas of research focus sought include atmospheric water vapor (in the contexts of trend detection and convection initiation), aerosols (and their physical properties and radiative significance), ice and liquid clouds (and their radiative significance), and remote detection of gaseous species using Raman spectral identification.

Requirements – A PhD in physics, engineering or atmospheric science is required as are a demonstrated ability to pursue independent research and a desire to participate in field campaign research. Selection is contingent upon obtaining NASA security clearance.

For best consideration, submit a cover letter (indicating position #612-15-01) a complete curriculum vitae, visa status (if applicable) and names and telephone numbers of three references by May 22, 2015 (application materials for this position will be accepted until position is filled) to: Ms. Danita Eichenlaub, Administrative Director, via email to eichenla@umbc.edu.
