[Seminar on June 27] Formation Mechanisms of Western North Pacific Anomalous Anticyclone during El Nino - A Review

Prof. Tim Li

University of Hawaii, Manoa, USA

Room 303, Keyan Building, IAP

10:00 am, June 27, 2017

Western North Pacific Anticyclone (WNPAC) is an important low-level atmospheric circulation system that conveys the El Nino effect on East Asia summer climate. In this talk I will review various theories on the WNPAC formation mechanisms, including local air-sea interaction in the western North Pacific, remote impact of tropical Indian Ocean SST, a combination mode that emphasizes nonlinear interaction between ENSO and annual cycle, and recently proposed enthalpy advection/Rossby wave modulation processes.
