[Seminar on June 12] From idealized to high-resolution numerical simulations with the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM)

Prof. Eric Chassignet

Florida State University, USA
Room 1118, I

10am, June 12, 2019

After a brief introduction of the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) and its applications, I will discuss the performance of global- and basin-scale configurations (coupled and uncoupled) as a function of forcing and horizontal resolution. Much can be learned from model-model comparison following the CORE (Coordinated Ocean-ice Reference Experiments) and OMIP (Ocean Model Intercomparison Project) protocols. I will then summarize the latest advances in high resolution ocean modeling by focusing on the impact of submesoscale features and tides on the ocean circulation.

Prof. Eric Chassignet received his Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from University of Miami in 1988. He is Professor and Director of the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS). His current area of research interest is on the role of the ocean in climate variability from the complementary perspectives of coupled ocean-atmosphere modeling and observations. He has published more than 160 papers in international journals. For the past 10 years, he has been the lead principal investigator and coordinator of HYCOM and is actively involved in international scientific programmes including CLIVAR and GODAE OceanView. He is an awardee of CAS President's International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI) for Visiting Fellows in 2019.
