To further enhance the cooperation between Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) - for the advancement of sciences in developing countries in the areas of scientific research, talents cultivation, technology training and strategy consulting; to promote scientific capacity building in developing countries; and to improve the science and technology innovation ability and international influence of CAS, CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence Project, which was based on the existing TWAS science centres of excellence, was initiated in March. The Centres of Excellence were selected among various institutes and centres of CAS under fairness and justice.
The International Centre for Climate and Environment Sciences (ICCES) is the cooperative and innovation research centre of CAS and TWAS, which undertakes the commissions of solving the scientific problems in global climate and ecological environment changes, promoting further cooperation and communication with research institutes of both developed countries and developing countries, and providing the developing countries with training programs and academic communication platforms in the area of climate and environment sciences. The research focus of ICCES are the key scientific problems in global climate and ecological environment changes, providing consultation for scientific policies in the negotiation of global climate change; as well as researches on the mechanism and theories of global climate changes and environmental disasters, meeting the needs of China and other developing countries for disaster mitigation and sustainable development. To improve the capacity building of developing countries in the area of climate and environment changes, ICCES organizes CAS-TWAS-WMO Forum on Climate Science and ICCES International Training Workshop. In the meantime, ICCES is devoted to promoting international cooperation project with developing countries in related research areas, improving the understanding of climate change as well as the experiences of management and adaptation in developing countries. CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence Project has been fully funded for RMB 2.8 million this year and CAS will continuously support its further development in the next 3 years, attracting oversea PhD.students, visiting scholars and academicians of TWAS to study and work in China. ICCES will be constructed into a demonstration base for cooperative and innovation research, scientific support as well as talents cultivation of CAS.
