The Second China – U.S Symposium on Meteorology:Severe Weather and Regional Climate;Variability and Predictability was held in Qingdao, China

The Second China – U.S Symposium on Meteorology Severe Weather and Regional Climate Variability and Predictability, sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Natural Science Foundation of China, Office of the President of The University of Oklahoma, College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, and National Weather Center, The University of Oklahoma with co-sponsor of American Meteorological Society, was held by Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), CAS in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China during 25-27 June, 2013; aiming to define the state of knowledge in the two countries for severe weather and regional climate variability and predictability and to identify the most important challenges for the next decade.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. Riyu Lu (IAP, CAS). Opening speech was addressed by Academician Qingcun Zeng, Prof. Huijun Wang, Director General of IAP and Dr. Berrien Moore III, Vice President for Weather & Climate Programs, University of Oklahoma. About the themes of Extreme Weather and Climate, Simulation of Mesoscale Phenomena, Severe Weather Processes and Predictability, Climate Predictability at Seasonal-to-interannual Timescales, and Long-Term (Decadal and beyond) Climate Simulation and Projection, there were 12 invited lectures and 85 presentations. Numerical new findings emerged in this conference, which projected great important significance to the progress in meteorology. On Jun 25, 2013, Qingcun Zeng, academician of CAS, addressed the dynamic structures of gusty wind disturbances and pointed out their important role in the entrainment of heavy aerosol particles. Prof. Xubin Zeng from University of Arizona highlighted the importance of 24 hourly records to obtain the accurate monthly mean data and how to define monsoon onset/retreat consistently in observation and models. And Prof. Qinyu Liu of Ocean University of China discussed their new findings that a new atmospheric teleconnection pattern is responsible for the west-east dipolar pattern of tropical Indo-western Pacific boreal winter rainfall. Besides, many other scientists from International Research Institute for Climate and Society (USA), Climate Prediction Center (NCEP, USA), University of Oklahoma (USA), Nanjing University (China), etc. gave interesting talks about extreme weather and climate. In the following two days, conventioneers carried out extensive scientific exchanges about simulation of mesoscale phenomena, severe weather processes and predictability, climate predictability at seasonal-to-interannual timescales, and long term climate simulation and projection, all the scientists agreed that they had a very fruitful discussion about updated research in the field of extreme weather and climate change, and the conference gave them a good change for further science cooperation.

The Third China – U.S Symposium on Meteorology will be held in US 2016.
