International Training Workshop on “Extreme Weather and Climate Events”

International Training Workshop on “Extreme Weather and Climate Events: detection, monitoring, prediction and risk management for developing countries” was held at Jingmin Hotel, July 14-23, Beijing, China. The workshop is organized by CAS-TWAS Center of Excellence for Climate and Environment Sciences (ICCES) and supported by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and The Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS).

 

During the 10 day training workshop, six invited lecturers, coming from China, United States, and Australia, had given 18 lectures covering topics of Observation of Extreme Events and its Detection, Monitoring and Prediction of Extreme Events, and Risk Management of Extreme Events. Over 60 participants attended the workshop, among which 26 were oversea participants from 14 developing countries, such as Pakistan, Iran, Mongolia, Thailand, Uganda etc. 13 selected participants also presented their research results, showing various aspects of the related topics in different countries. Besides, the participants visited China Meteorological Administration (CMA), University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), CAS-TWAS center of excellence for Climate and Environment Sciences (ICCES) and IAP Supercomputing System.

 

The participants all expressed their gratitude for the essential skills and experiences learnt in the field of extreme weather and climate events. They also acknowledged the workshop for providing the international communication platform for closer international cooperation and academic communication, which will further enhance the scientific capacity of developing countries.
