At the invitation of Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Sir Brian Hoskins, the Director of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London and Foreign Fellow of CAS, John M. Wallace, Professor of University of Washington and Member of National Academy of Sciences and Ka-Kit Tung, Professor of University of Washington and Fellow of American Meteorological Society visited LASG and IAP on 20 September, 2013. They gave the reports titled of “Potential Vorticity Perspectives on JJA Monsoons”, “Effect of the Mean Flow on MJO Structure” and “On the Recent Hiatus of Global Warming” respectively. In addition, Norden E. Huang, Professor of National Central University and Member of National Academy of Engineering (USA), Zhaohua Wu, Professor of the Florida State University and Lady Jacqueline Hoskins visited IAP / CAS as the accompanying scientists.
The three reports were hosted by Academician Guoxiong Wu, Academician Ronghui Huang and Academician Guangyu Shi. As the influential scientists in the field of Atmospheric Science, their reports attracted participants from China Meteorological Administration, State Oceanic Administration of the People’s Republic of China, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, IAP, etc.
Prof. Brian Hoskins, Prof. John M. Wallace, Prof. Ka-Kit Tung, Prof. Norden E. Huang and Prof. Zhaohua Wu expressed their highly appreciation for IAP’s achievements on the related scientific issues. The reports enjoyed a warm atmosphere which covered by actively interaction in the Q & A sections, Chinese scientists and students seized the chance to discuss and learn from the three scientists within the limited time.
In order to get up-close to the great masters, Students’ Union of IAP organized activity of “Accessing to the Big Fish ” after the scientific reports. As the important guests, Prof. Brian Hoskins, Prof. John M. Wallace and Prof. Ka-Kit Tung talked about their life experiences based on their own research and achievements, which were very beneficial for students’ future plan in the scientific development.
On behalf of the IAP members, Academician Guoxiong Wu expressed his deeply grateful for three scientists’ visit in IAP, he wished there would be more opportunities for Chinese students to communicate with the top scientists in the world directly.
