The Fifth International Workshop on Monsoons (IWM-V) was held on 28 October-1 November, 2013 (28-31 October in Macao, China and 1 November in Hong Kong, China). IWM series is a part of the WMO major quadrennial symposia and workshops series under the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP), will be held every four years. High priority is given to this IWM Series in response to the CAS guidance that WWRP should focus on research for the reduction of disaster risks through improved forecasts of high-impact weather.
IWM-V is proposed and generously organized by the Monsoon Panel of the WWRP Working Group on Tropical Meteorology Research. It was also hosted by the Government of Macao China, Hong Kong Observatory, Hong Kong Meteorological Society, CLIVAR Asian-Australian Monsoon Panel Madden-Julian Oscillation Task Force, and Asian Monsoon Year Science Steering Committee.
IWM-V provided a forum for researchers and forecasters to discuss recent advances and current issues covering meso-scale, synoptic scale, extended range scale, intraseasonal scale and climate scale. The IWM-V is also an effective means to transfer new science and technology to National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in these monsoon regions.
IWM-V includes invited reviews, contributed oral and poster papers. Academician WU Guoxiong, Academician HUANG Ronghui, Prof. ZHOU Tianjun, Prof. LI Jianping, Prof. LIU Yimin, Associate Prof. WANG Lin and other scientists from Institute of Atmospheric Sciences have actively participated in the invited reviews and contributed oral sessions. Besides, Academician FU Congbing from Nanjing University, Prof. LUO Yali from Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences and Prof. MENG Zhiyong from Peking University made significant contribution to the invited reviews session. Prof. ZHOU chaired 13th Session of the Asian-Australian Monsoon Panel (AAMP13) with Dr. Carlos Ereno.
