2013 academic annual meeting of State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences was held in Beijing on December 3-4th, 2013. The opening ceremony was hosted by Dr. Zhenghui Xie, Deputy-Director of LASG. Mr. Xiaobo Ren, head of the Resources, Environment and Biology Division, Bureau of Major R&D Programs, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr. Jiang Zhu, Vice-Director of Institute of Atmospheric Physics had respectively addressed congratulations to the meeting. They not merely fully affirmed LASG’s accomplishment but also put forward higher requirement for LASG’s future development, who is expected to be an internationally excellent laboratory and a leader in the field of domestic atmospheric sciences research.
On behalf of LASG’s leading group, Dr. Riyu Lu, Director of LASG gave participants a report on “Work Summary of LASG in 2013”. He presented LASG’s scientific research and management work and proposed the prospect of future work in 2014, which centered on research progress and highlights of the four priority research areas, project application, building of talent teams, international organizations appointment, etc. During 2013, LASG has made a remarkable progress in the scientific research and laboratory management as follows:
1. Scientific Research: LASG has published 209 papers including 161 SCI papers; Dr. Yongqiang Yu has gained “Zhu Li Yue Hua” excellent teacher award and other 15 scientists obtained “2013 Outstanding Graduate Student Advisor” which issued by College of Earth Science, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Dr. Wenmin Man and Dr. Weihua Yuan received F5000 Program of “China’s Top Journals of Science and Technology” and “Excellent PhD Theses in China” respectively;
2. Community Services: Dr. Tianjun Zhou, Deputy-Director of LASG, has been elected as the Co-Chair of Asian-Australian Monsoon Panel (AAMP), CLIVAR; Dr. Wansuo Duan, Director Assistant of LASG, has the honor to be the committee member of International Commission on Dynamical Meteorology (ICDM).
3. Project Application: LASG members have successfully applied for 1 State Key Program of National Natural Science of China, 1 Major Research Plan of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 International Cooperation Project and 24 scientific programs as well.
Next, LASG members and scholars from associate organizations reported the latest progress centred on the topics of “Monsoon Dynamics”, “Climate Dynamics”, “Predictability and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics”, and “Numerical Modeling and Simulation”. Attendees at the meeting also include the executives of LASG’s open subjects who talked about new sciences focusing on the research mission. Besides, posters presented in the meeting achieved favorable response and offered a positive communication platform.
It finds that there were over 200 representatives attended the meeting. Apart from LASG members, other participants were from affiliated departments of China Meteorological Administration, Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics, The Second Institute of Oceanography, SOA, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Ocean University of China, City University of Hong Kong, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Lanzhou University, University of Science and Technology of China, PLA University of Science and Technology, Sun Yat-Sen University, National Supercomputing Center of Tianjin, Computer Network Information Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences and leaders and experts and other colleagues from IAP. The academic annual meeting not only reviewed LASG’s research and management work throughout the year, but better accelerate its future affirmative development.
