The Chinese National Committee for Future Earth (CNC-FE) was founded on 21 March, 2014. CNC-FE is sponsored by China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and jointly supported by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Prof. Qin Dahe, the President of CNC-FE, chaired the inaugural meeting.
Future Earth is a 10-year international research programme (2014-2023) jointly initiated by ICSU (International Council for Science), ISSC (International Social Science Council), Belmont Forum, UN Educational Scientific Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as an observer. It will provide critical knowledge required for societies to face the challenges posed by global environmental change and to identify opportunities for a transition to global sustainability. Future Earth will answer fundamental questions about how and why the global environment is changing, what are likely future changes, what are risks and implications for human development and the diversity of life on Earth, and what the opportunities are to reduce risks and vulnerabilities, enhance resilience and innovation, and implement transformations to prosperous and equitable futures. The proposed research themes of Future Earth are “Dynamic Planet”, “Global Development” and “Transformations towards Sustainability” and its 8 cross-cutting capabilities are “Observing Systems”, “Data Systems”, “Earth System Modelling”, “Theory Development”, “Scoping and Synthesis”, “Communication and Engagement”, “Capacity Development and Education” and “Science-Policy Interface Activities”. Future Earth will be co-designed and co-produced and ultimately co-delivered by research, science-policy interface, funders, governments, development organizations, business and industry, civil society (NGOs etc.) and media, encompass bottom-up ideas from the wide scientific community, be solution-oriented, and inclusive of existing international Global Environmental Change projects and related research activities.
CNC-FE is aimed to organize Chinese scientists to participate in the Future Earth and make full use of international resources to boost China’s technological level and policy making in the construction of eco-civilization , said Dahe Qin.
The committee is made up of more than 40 experts from the fields of natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, funding agencies and media towards a new mode of communications and engagement, i.e., co-design, co-produce and co-deliver, . Prof. Qin Dahe, Vice President of CAST, was appointed the President of CNC-FE, and Dr. Zhang Qin (CAST), Prof. Du Xiangwan (CAE), Prof. Fu Bojie (Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, CAS), Prof. Liu Congqiang (NSFC), Dr. Pan Jiahua (Institute for Urban and Environmental Studies, CASS) and Prof. Wu Guoxiong (Institute of Atmospheric Sciences, CAS) were appointed the Vice President of CNC-FE by CAST. The Secretariat is located at the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modelling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), IAP, CAS, with Dr. Zhou Tianjun as the Secretary General.
The inauguration of CNC-FE signaled China’s full participation in Future Earth. Within the Future Earth framework, the CNC-FE will focus on major subjects of public and government concerns, including pollution, urbanization, energy supply and natural disaster in China and Asia.
