Future Earth Science Committee (FE SC) / Interim Engagement Committee ( FE iEC) & Chinese National Committee (CNC-FE) for Future Earth Joint Workshop was held in Beijing on 3rd June, 2014. The workshop was co-sponsored by China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), CNC-FE, FE iEC and supported by the “External Cooperation Program of Bureau of International Cooperation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)”. Academician Dahe Qin (President of CNC-FE), Academician Guoxiong Wu (Vice President of CNC-FE), Dr. Mark Stafford Smith (Chair of FE SC) and Prof. Bob Watson (Chair of FE iEC) chaired the workshop.
The objectives of the workshop are to be informed of the latest progress and the plans of Future Earth, be informed of and support the co-design framework of Future Earth in China and encourage discussion across disciplines on some of the most pressing global sustainability challenges, and provide suggestions on co-design with stakeholders within the Chinese context. The workshop is composed of overview session and three thematic sessions (air pollution, urbanisation and transformations to sustainability). Every thematic session is made up of a local natural scientist, a social scientist and a stakeholder. Prof. Xiaoye Zhang (Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences), Prof. Wenying Chen (Tsinghua University), Dr. Jie Yu (The Nature Conservancy), Academician Bojie Fu (Vice President of CNC-FE), Prof. Xuemei Bai (member of FE SC), Prof. Ying Kong (President of Tsinghua-INET New Economic Research Institute ), Prof. Qian Ye (Executive Director of International Project Office, Integrated Risk Governance Project (IRGP/IHDP)), Academician Nianzhi Jiao (Xiamen University), Dr. Jun Chen (National Geomatics Center of China), Prof. Jiahua Pan (Vice President of CNC-FE) and Prof. Yi Wang (Institute of Policy and Management, CAS) made presentations in the Three Thematic Sessions.
Future Earth is a 10-year international research programme sponsored by the Science and Technology Alliance for Global Sustainability comprising the International Council for Science (ICSU), the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the Belmont Forum of funding agencies, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations University (UNU), and the World Meteorological Organization as an observer. It is a global platform for international scientific collaboration, providing the knowledge required for societies in the world to face risks posed by global environmental change and to seize opportunities in a transition to global sustainability. The second FE SC meeting/the first FE iEC meeting would be held in China on 4-6 June, 2014. FE and CNC-FE decided to take this chance to run a one-day joint workshop on 3 June so that both parties can have a deeply communication and make contribution to the ecological civilization construction and sustainable development.
