Delegation from Fudan Tyndall Centre, Fudan University visited Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IAP, CAS) and the secretariat of Chinese National Committee for Future Earth (CNC-FE) located at IAP on 11 August, 2014. The purpose of this visit was to fully support and positively involve in the CNC-FE activities through the strength of Fudan Tyndall Centre and University of East Anglia (UEA). Prof. Trevor DAVIES (Co-director of Fudan Tyndall Centre, Fudan University) and Associate Prof. JIANG Ping (Director Assistant of Fudan Tyndall Centre, Fudan University) composed the delegation. Prof. WU Guoxiong (Vice President of CNC-FE), Mr. QIN Jiuyi (Director of Division of International Organization, Department of International Affairs, CAST), Prof. ZHOU Tianjun Zhou (Secretary General of CNC-FE) and secretaries Ms. LIN Zheng and Ms. JIN Nan attended the meeting.
The meeting was chaired by Prof. WU Guoxiong. Mr. QIN Jiuyi gave the welcoming remarks. He outlined the role of CAST in ICSU and establishment of FE permanent secretariat. Prof. WU and Mr. QIN agreed it is crucial for FE to absorb the involvement of Stakeholders both nationally and regionally. Then, Prof. JIANG Ping introduced activities of the Fudan Tyndall Centre during the last couple of years. Next, Prof. Trevor DAVIES described “How Fudan Tyndall Centre can help in supporting CNC-FE”. He indicated that Fudan Tyndall Centre could assist CNC-FE Secretariat from five core functions: coordination, communication & outreach, research enabling, capacity building, synthesis & foresight. On behalf of CNC-FE, Prof. ZHOU briefly introduced the structure and annual working plans of CNC-FE. He suggested that Fudan Tyndall Centre taking part in the research programme of 12 key research areas made by CNC-FE experts.
During the discussing section, CNC-FE suggested Fudan Tyndall Centre selecting one of the topics from 12 key research areas and supporting one of the workshops. It was concurred that the detail arrangement will be discussed in the next step.
CNC-FE, co-sponsored by CAS, CAST and other organizations in China, is aimed to organize Chinese scientists to participate in the Future Earth, which is a 10-year international research programme jointly initiated by ICSU (International Council for Science), ISSC (International Social Science Council) and others that will provide critical knowledge required for societies to face the challenges posed by global environmental change and to identify opportunities for a transition to global sustainability. CNC-FE will make full use of international resources to boost China’s technological level and policy making in the construction of eco-civilization.
