The first Science Meeting of Climate Science for Service Partnership(CSSP) China was held from October 13-15, 2014 in Beijing. The aim of the meeting was to scope out the opportunity for accelerating the current partnership, building on existing collaborations between the three institutions, namely, the joint activity between the MO, CMA and IAP, which have been developed over several years, supported now by the Climate Science for Service Partnership
Prof Jiao Meiyan, Deputy Administrator of China Meteorological Administration (CMA), Prof Stephen Belcher, Head of the Met Office Hadley Center, Prof Zhujiang, Director-General of the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences made speeches at the opening ceremony.
More than 90 participants attended the meeting from Beijing Climate Centre, Hadley Centre, IAP, Beijing Municipal Meteorological Bureau, Beijing Normal University, Nanjing University, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology and British Embassy to China.
Prof Zhu Jiang expressed support and active involvement of IAP in CSSP. He expected to enhance the linkage between climate science and services and learn from Hadley Center to improve the research capability thorough the CSSP.
There are five working packages under the CSSP: monitoring, attribution and reanalysis; global dynamics of climate variability and change; east Asia climate variability and its prediction; development of near-term climate projections; and climate services. This meeting aims to set up working package leaders and principal scientists, scope out key issues, and work out detailed plans for working package.
Through cooperation, a strong strategic partnership will be established between UK and Chinese climate scientists, to translate world-class science into services, support climate-resilient economic growth, further reduce climatic disasters and better adapt to climate changes, promote the implementation of GFCS, and benefit the peoples in both countries.
