The 2014 National Doctoral Academic Forum on Atmospheric Sciences and the 14th Youth Cross-Strait Academic Seminar were jointly held at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) during October 19 to 21, 2014. This meeting was mainly organized by IAP, with financial assistance chiefly from the Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs, the Bureau of International Cooperation of CAS. About 160 experts, young scientists, PhD candidates from IAP, Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth, Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Institute of Earth environment, Chinese Culture University in Taipei, Taiwan University (NTNU), Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Zhejiang University, Lanzhou University, Nanjing Information Engineering University, Chengdu University of Information Technology, Ocean University of China, The PLA University of Science and Technology, Sun Yat-sen University and the China Meteorological Administration participated in the conference.
In the opening ceremony, ZHU Jiang, the Director General of IAP, expressed his thanks to HUANG Ronghui and LIU Guangying for their contributions to establishing this platform for exchanging academic ideas among cross-strait young scientists. Then he commended on several features of this conference, such as being solely organized by graduate students, newly implemented procedure of expert comments which aim at promoting interactions among young scholars and experts. At the end of his address, ZHU encouraged young scholars and graduate students to have patience and perseverance and rejoicing in independent thinking and solving problems during their research.
After the speech, AN Jianji, director of the Bureau of International Cooperation of CAS, briefly introduced the history of cross-strait research activities, emphasized the increasing influences of atmospheric science on human welfare and expressed his wishes to push the current research work to a higher standard through cross-strait cooperation.
The two-day forum was divided into two separate sections, the meteorology section and the atmospheric physics and its environment section, during which about 70 presentations were delivered by PhD candidates from both sides. Research fields covered by these reports include planetary boundary layers, stratopause, planetary scale and micro-scale motions, Earth’s atmosphere and Mar’s atmosphere, which further ignited the fire of brainstorming among attendants.
During the closing ceremony, 8 students were awarded the certificate of the“Best Thesis”, “Best Idea”, ”Most Eloquence”and the“Best Presentation”. PhD candidate representative Mr. LUO Shihao from the NTNU said his experience deepened his understanding of research areas when attending lectures and thanked for leaving him such a precious memory. MIU Yuan, Deputy Director of UCAS, expressed his hope for this academic communications to make for a better living environment in China.
