The 1st Congress of China Geodesy and Geophysics (CCGG) was held in Beijing, China

The first CCGG brought together over 2000 Chinese scientists and graduate students from universities and research institutes gathered at China University of Geosciences in Beijing from 25-26 October 2014 to exchange on the latest progress in earth and planetary sciences made by Chinese community, discuss how Chinese community of IUGG can contribute to “Future Earth”, a 10-year international research programme jointly initiated by International Council for Science (ICSU), International Social Science Council (ISSC), Belmont Forum, UN Educational Scientific Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN University (UNU) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and plan for the 2015 IUGG General Assembly.

The theme of the first CCGG was “from Global Change to Future Earth”. The Congress was composed of overview session and 43 thematic sessions and the subjects covered  cryospheric sciences, geodesy, geomagnetism and aeronomy, hydrological sciences, meteorology amd atmospheric sciences, physical sciences of ocean, seismology and physics of the Earth’s Interior, volcanology and chemistry of the Earth’s Interior. The “Youth Excellent Thesis Awards” for 10 graduate students were awarded to encourage young scholars to involve in the IUGG and CNC-IUGG activities.

Prof. Jianping Li, Secretary General of CNC-IUGG announced the beginning of the Congress and Prof. Guoxiong Wu, President of CNC-IUGG and Prof. Jianyun Zhang, Vice President of CNC-IUGG presided the opening ceremony and invited lectures separately. At the opening ceremony, Prof. Kechang Xie, Vice President of CAST, Prof. Yong Chen, Director of the Academic Division of Earth Sciences, CAS and Mr. Hongbing Wang, Secretary of Party, China University of Geosciences, Beijing (CUGB) delivered the welcoming remarks respectively. Prof. Dahe Qin, Vice President of CNC-IUGG, Prof. Harsh Gupta, President of IUGG, Dr. Alik Ismail-Zadeh, Secretary General of IUGG and Prof. Chengshan Wang from CUGB delivered lectures centered on “Climate Change and Cryospheric Sciences”, "Sustainability of Urbanization and Natural Hazards: Earthquakes and Tsunamis”, "International Cooperation in Geodesy and Geophysics to Beinefit the Society” and “Earth’s Deep Time Insight into Future Earth”.

Chinese National Committee for International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (CNC-IUGG) is a non-governmental, scientific organization, established by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) in 1979. CNC-IUGG is dedicated to the promotion and coordination of Chinese scientific studies of Earth (physical, chemical and mathematical) and the cooperation and communication with international geosciences community. CNC-IUGG is comprised of eight semi-autonomous Associations, each responsible for a range of topics or themes within the overall scope of Union activities, they are:

  • Chinese National Committee for International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (CNC-IACS)
  • Chinese National Committee for International Association of Geodesy (CNC-IAG)
  • Chinese National Committee for International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (CNC-IAGA)
  • Chinese National Committee for International Association of Hydrological Sciences (CNC-IAHS)
  • Chinese National Committee for International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (CNC-IAMAS)
  • Chinese National Committee for International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Ocean (CNC-IAPSO)
  • Chinese National Committee for International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth’s Interior (CNC-IASPEI)
  • Chinese National Committee for International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (CNC-IAVCEI)

The first CCGG is jointly sponsored by the CNC-IUGG, China Association of Science and Technology (CAST) and the Academic Division of Earth Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), hosted by China University of Geosciences, Beijing. Co-organized by the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modelling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), CAS; Key Laboratory of Physical Oceanorgaphy, MOE, China; College of Global Change and Earth System Science, Beijing Normal University; Centre for Geodetic Data Processing, National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation (NASG); GNSS Research Centre, Wuhan University and Hebei Mapping Institute.
