Cross strait workshop on air-sea multi-scale interaction and tropical cyclone over the western North Pacific (WNP) warm pool and cooperation prospect held in Yangzhou

Cross strait workshop on air-sea multi-scale interaction and tropical cyclone (TC) over the western North Pacific (WNP) warm pool and cooperation study prospect was held in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province during November 10-13, 2014. The workshop was organized by the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese academy of sciences (IAP). Almost 50 scientists from the Mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong attended this workshop, including Center of Monsoon System Research in IAP, National Taiwan University, National Kaohsiung Marine University, National Chiayi University, National Taiwan Normal University, City University of Hong Kong, Nanjing University, Sun Yat-sen University, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Yangzhou University, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, National Climate Center, and Shanghai Typhoon Institute. This workshop was jointly supported by Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China (area) cooperative research project, and the key project of National Natural Science Fund. The aim of the workshop is to present the latest research results from the cross-strait cooperation, discuss the current international frontier issues on air-sea multi-scale interaction and TC over the WNP and deliberate over the further cooperation on TC between the Mainland and Taiwan.

During the workshop, many outstanding scholars and experts made an excellent report on the following three scientific questions: the roles of air-sea multi-scale interaction in tropical cyclogenesis over the WNP warm pool, the effects of large-scale circulations on TC activity over the WNP and its mechanisms, and the high-resolution numerical simulation of TC. They are Prof. Ronghui Huang from IAP, Prof. Ben Jong-Dao Jou, Prof. Chun-Chieh Wu, Prof. Chung-Hsiung Sui and Prof. I.-I Lin from National Taiwan University, Prof. Jau-Ming Chen from National Kaohsiung Marine University, Prof. Cheng-Ta Chen from National Taiwan Normal University Prof. Pei-Hua Tan from National Chiayi University, Prof. Zhemin Tan, Prof. Xiuqun Yang and Prof. Yuan Wang from Nanjing University, Prof. Renhe Zhang from Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Prof. Liguang Wu from Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Prof. Zhiping Wen from Sun Yat-sen University, Prof. Wen Chen and Prof. Huizhi Liu from IAP, etc.. Scientists suggested that it is necessary to further carry out this kind of academic exchange activity in the future.

After the academic reports, both sides discussed the further cooperation plans. They had a heated discussion on the scientific questions of TC over the WNP, and the future research cooperation across Taiwan Strait, and scholar exchanges. All agree that it’s of great significance to make a further cooperation on air-sea multi-scale interaction and TC over the WNP warm pool.
