Prof. Academician WU Guoxiong was recently elected Fellow of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) .
Established in 2013, IUGG fellowship is a tribute, awarded by the IUGG Bureau, to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to international cooperation in geodesy or geophysics and attained eminence in the field of Earth and space sciences. Elected Fellows will be bestowed a certificate of IUGG Fellowship, a Silver Medal, and a pin to be presented by the IUGG President at the Opening Ceremony of the XXVI IUGG General Assembly on 23 June 2015 in Prague, Czech Republic.
Prof. WU graduated from Nanjing Institute of Meteorology in 1966, received his doctorate in 1983 at London University Imperial College and worked as a visiting scientist at European Centre for Medium-Range Forecasts from 1983-1984. He returned to China and worked at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1985. He was elected the Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1997 and was elected Honorary Member of Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS) in 2012. Prof. Wu has been playing an active role in international cooperation and coordination. He had been the Ordinary Member of the Executive Board (EB) of International Council of Science (ICSU) (2011-2014), President of International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences(IAMAS). He currently serves as President of Chinese National Committee for International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (CNC-IUGG), President of China National Committee for ICSU (CNC-ICSU) and Vice-Chair of Chinese National Committee for Future Earth (CNC-FE) . Prof. Wu’s research involves weather and climate dynamics, including numerical modeling and data diagnosis. He is also an Honorary Member of Royal Meteorological Society of UK.
