"The 4th WCRP CORDEX Science and Training Workshop in East Asia” was held in 23-26 November 2015 at International Conference Centre of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China. This workshop is jointly supported by International Center for Climate and Environment Sciences (ICCES) of IAP/CAS, APN (Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research), WCRP (World Climate Research Programme), RIMES (Regional Integrated Multi-hazard Early warning System) and Monsoon Asia Integrated Regional Study (MAIRS).
The Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) is a WCRP initiative to provide global coordination of regional climate downscaling for improved regional climate change adaptation and impact assessment. From 2013, APN funded a 3-year ARCP project to support the CORDEX Asian activity in sub-regions of South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia. By this APN support and collaborating with regional partners as MAIRS, IITM (Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology), ICIMOD (International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development), BMKG (Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics) and NUM (National University of Malaysia), IAP had successfully organized “The 2nd WCRP/CORDEX Science and Training Workshop in South Asia” in Aug of 2013 in Kathmandu, Nepal; “The 1st WCRP/CORDEX Science and Training Workshop in Southeast Asia” in Nov. of 2014 in Citeko, Indonesia.
The he 4th WCRP CORDEX Science and Training Workshop in East Asia started with 2 day training with the task of training on RCMs modeling, data analysis and applications for young scientists from East and Southeast Asia region. Experts from Institute of Atmospheric Physics, China Meteorological Administration, Beijing Forestry University of China, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, and CSIRO Atmospheric Research of Autralia provided lectures on the themes of “Analysis of global climate model simulations and NCL”, “Application of regional climate models and regional climate change projections”, “Modeling Water-Food-Energy Nexus with the GEPIC Model”, “Application of regional climate model output into hydrological simulation”, “Downscaling using variable-resolution global models (in particular CCAM)” and “Circulaton-Index-Based Statistical Downscaling Model (CISDM), a tool for learning how to downscale daily precipitation”. More than 50 students, including Mongolia, China, Thailand, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Viet man, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, were taken part in the training part.
The workshop 2 day sciences meeting combines 22 presentations on the topics of overview of CORDEX Asia, climate variability and climate modeling in East Asia, Climate variability and climate modeling in East Asia, Application of climate modeling products, and regional activities. Prof. Zhaohui LIN, director of ICCES, presented the regional climate modeling and its implication in ICCES/CAS; Dr. G. Srinivasan from RIMES of Thailand introduced RIMES via Skype. Deputy director of Pakistan Meteorological Department, Dr. Muhammad Afzaal; Deputy of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology of Myanmar, Mr. Hla Tun; and Mr. H.M.R.C. Herath from Department of Meteorology of Sri Lanka, made 3 presentations on their regional climate model activities.
The next step of CORDEX East Asia and CORDEX Asia was dicussed as the closing session of the workshop, which includes table for GCM-RCM metrics, sharing station measurements data, statistical downscaling group for Asia, and building up CORDEX ESGF (Earth System Grid Federation) nodes in Asia.
The 4th WCRP CORDEX Science and Training Workshop in East Asia enhanced capacity building of young scientists in East Asia and Southeast Asia region, and sharing the knowledge of current researches related to regional climate model and it is an important move to the implementation of Phase II experiment of CORDEX in East Asia.
