The National Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG)

Website:http://www.lasg.ac.cn/
The State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG) was founded in 1985 and was opened to the public in September of the same year. In 1989, LASG was promoted to a State Key Laboratory. Thanks to the leadership of previous LASG directors, Professors Qingcun Zeng, Guoxiong Wu, and Bin Wang, and a large collaborative effort of all LASG members, LASG has become an internationally renowned laboratory of atmospheric sciences. LASG was rated a Top-ranking State Key Laboratory in the six consecutive national assessments of 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2005, and 2010. Professor Riyu Luis the current Director of LASG, and Professor Chongyin Li is Director of the LASG Academic Committee.

LASG’s mission is to be one of the world’s top atmospheric research and education centers, and to play a prominent role in key international programs. In pursuit of its mission, LASG has identified the following priority research areas: (I)earth system model development and application,(II) weather and climate dynamics,(III) the predictability of weather and climate, and (IV) geophysical fluid dynamics. Consequently, four research groups have been established, with each group in charge of a specific research area. Basic climate studies area common concern for the next five years. The principal investigators of the teams are among the most respected researchers in their fields and have extensive research networks in China and abroad, with which they interact.

The staff at LASG currently include about 50 scientists, 120 postgraduate students, and 10 administrative staff.
